Thomas Earl Emmer Jr., better known as Tom Emmer, is an American attorney and politician. Born on March 3, 1961, he has served as the U.S. representative for Minnesota’s 6th congressional district since 2015, representing the Republican Party.
Early Life and Education
Emmer was born in South Bend, Indiana, but his family later moved to Edina, Minnesota. He attended St. Thomas Academy, an all-male Catholic military college-preparatory high school in Mendota Heights, near Saint Paul.
Emmer pursued his education at Boston College and the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where he graduated in 1984 with a Bachelor of Arts in political science. He also played hockey during his time at both schools. In 1988, Emmer received a Juris Doctor from William Mitchell College of Law in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
Emmer’s political career began with service on the city councils of Independence and Delano. Before joining Congress, he served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2004 to 2008.
In Congress, Emmer has taken on significant roles within his party. He served as the Chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee for the 116th Congress and the 117th Congress. After the Republicans gained a majority in the 2022 U.S. House of Representatives elections, he successfully ran for the position of majority whip.
