Missouri Care, Inc. and Clarity Healthcare are collaborating to create the Clarity Healthcare Community Diaper Bank to provide diapers to parents in need in the Hannibal community.
The project is being funded with an initial donation of $5,000 from Missouri Care, Inc., a WellCare Health Plans, Inc. company. Clarity Outreach Coordinator Jacinda Epperson, LPN, CHW, said the diaper bank will work with other Hannibal area agencies to identify parents experiencing diaper needs, as well as collect ongoing diaper donations.
The donation was presented today to Clarity Healthcare by Missouri Care representatives.
Epperson said she is excited Missouri Care recognized this need in the community and agreed to work with Clarity officials to get the project off the ground.
“Every day we see parents who are struggling to make ends meet and are unable to afford diapers, which can often cost $70 to $90 a month, for their children,” she said. “Without a sufficient supply of clean diapers, these children can suffer skin irritations and urinary tract infections.
“Most daycare providers also require parents to provide a certain amount of diapers for their child in order to keep them in daycare,” she added. “When a parent cannot provide the diapers, they are unable to send their child to daycare, which means the child misses out on childhood education programs, and the parent is unable to work and support their family.”
“As the leading MO Healthnet Medicaid provider, Missouri Care understands the importance of going beyond healthcare to treat the barriers to healthcare a community may face,” said Lou Gianquinto, president of Missouri Care. “At WellCare, we’re honored to partner with Clarity Healthcare to help them serve the community.”
