Fourteen new members of the Nels Joesting Chapter National Honor Society were inducted into the chapter at 7 p.m. Monday, March 11, in the Mark Twain High School library.

As parents and friends watched the current NHS officers read the history of NHS and explained the four pillars of eligibility:

• Scholarship – students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher

• Service – voluntary contributions by the student to the school or community, done without compensation

• Leadership – leaders are resourceful, good problem solvers and contribute ideas; leadership roles may be at school or in the community

• Character – students of good character demonstrate high standards of honesty, reliability, courtesy, concern, and respect for others; maintains a clean disciplinary record

NHS adviser Adria Palmer called the names of the new inductees and MTHS principal Clark Howell presented each with their certificate. Lauren Williams gave each inductee a candle and past members passed the light of knowledge from their candles to the new inductees as each one lit their candle.

After the ceremony members took pictures and refreshments were served.
