The Northeast Missouri Humane Society (NEMOHS) is asking for donations to purchase a new vehicle for transporting animals. “Any money will help, and it all adds up,” said Janet Adrian Smith, executive director of NEMOHS. The Humane Society has been out of a vehicle since January 15th, and Smith said her staff is currently using their vehicles to transport animals to adoption events and the veterinary clinic. “That’s not a good situation,” said Smith. Also, the vehicle is used for Puppies for Parole, a program in which selected offenders in Missouri Prisons have the opportunity to become trainers to rescue dogs.

The Nonprofit Organization provides care and shelter to nearly 2,000 homeless animals in the Northeast Missouri area. While paid staff take care of cleaning and feeding the animals, Smith said volunteers are always needed to interact with sheltered animals. NEMOHS aims to keep animals healthy by providing spay/neuter surgery, rabies vaccines, heartworm tests, DA2PPLV, Bordetella vaccines, and worm and flea treatment for dogs as well as spay/neuter surgery, rabies vaccines, feline leukemia tests, and worm and flea treatment for cats. The cost to adopt a dog is $125 while cat adoption varies from $45-$65.

So far, $1,310 has been raised for a new vehicle. The Humane Society is looking for a newer, reliable transport van and asks anyone who knows of a vehicle fitting this description to contact them at 573-221-9222. To donate, please search for @NortheastMissouriHumaneSociety on Facebook, visit, or send money to the Society’s PO Box 205. The Humane Society is also struggling with an insufficient building in size, currently located at 2923 Warren Barrett Dr. Hannibal, Missouri 63401. The society hopes to build a new shelter by the year 2020 on Veterans Rd in Hannibal, but continues to seek out donors to support the project.
