by Carolyn Trower

Third round play in the Salisbury Tournament on Saturday put the Mark Twain Tigers against the Glasgow Yellow Jackets for third place.

Mark Twain got off to a sluggish start and trailed 7-16 at the end of the first quarter and 10-30 at the half.

After the half the Tigers outscored the Jackets 13-7 in the third quarter. Things intensified in the fourth quarter. It had been a physical game for both teams with fouls aplenty and floor squabbles for loose balls.

At the start of the fourth quarter the Tigers added 5 points before allowing Glasgow to score. From there it back and forth and the Tigers trailed by 10 points midway through the quarter. The Tigers continued to battle and a 3-pointer by Kaden Eliot with one minute to go tied the game 44-44. After the Yellow Jackets put up another basket with 27 seconds left, Preston Eckler drew a foul and made both shots to end the game 46-46.
Elliott popped another 3-pointer to start the Tigers’ 12-point drive to victory. The edge for the win came from the Tigers’ 7 points from free throws. Elliott, Eckler, and Jace Barton all added shots to take the 58-51 win and the trophy.

Eckler led the scoring with 22 points including two 3-pointers and going 10 for 14 from the line.

Elliott followed with 21 points including four 3-pointers and going 5 for 6 from the line.

Barton added 9 points with one 3-pointer and going 5 for 6 from the line.

Ryan Spoonhower added 4 points.

Caleb Peters was 1 for 6 from the line.
