Mark Twain Jr-High Tigers Defeat Monroe City in Season Opener
The first quarter ended with no score for either squad as both teams worked to conquer nerves and come together as a team.
Monroe City opened up the second quarter with a TD run and a successful two-point conversion. Mark Twain answered back with a score on a pass from Conner Eckler to Jaxen Lake and their own two-point conversion, carried in by Lakoda Preston.
Helping to keep the offense on the field in the second quarter were a fumble recovery by Josh Brothers and an interception by Lukas McLeod. Preston then ran 73 yards for the score and Dante Kelly ran in the conversion, making the score going into half-time, Mark Twain 16 and Monroe City 8.
The third quarter had Mark Twain scoreless but Monroe City did cross the goal line for a touchdown, but they were unsuccessful on the conversion. The score at the end of the third quarter was Mark Twain 16 and Monroe City 14.
The fourth quarter proved to be the best for the Tigers. Lukas McLeod ran into the end zone for the score, but the conversion attempt was no good. After a fumble recovery by Lake, Preston got his second rushing touchdown and Gavin Davis successfully ran in the conversion. The Mark Twain defense held Monroe City scoreless for the quarter, ending the game with a final score of Mark Twain 30 and Monroe City 14.
Coach Alex Brandenburg stated, “Our front line did a great job blocking, tonight. They held Monroe City scoreless for two quarters.” That line included Coleman Epperson, Clayton Turnbull, Tyler Armour, Nathaniel Ferry, Eli Oglesby, and Wyatt Evans. Josh Brothers led the team in tackles and Junior Anderson forced a fumble.
The team is 1-0 and will travel to Clopton on Tuesday, September 11 and back at home on Thursday, September 20.
